Let’s introduce ourselves…
We are Shannon and Kate and we are working to raise money for Project WOO (waves of Optimism) in the fishing community of Playa Gigante, Nicaragua.
We met about 2 years ago while Shannon was traveling in Australia (Kate was her tour guide). From then we became good friends and this year while Kate was traveling throughout South America, we decided to meet up in Central America and travel together. After traveling throughout Nicaragua for the past 2 months being typical tourists (doing the usual sightseeing, sunbaking and sleeping late) a change was needed. While working at 'Little Morgans Hostel' in Ometepe, Nicaragua we found ourselves talking to a group of New Zealanders who had spent some time on a beachside village working with the local community. From what they told us you could do all sorts of things, from surfing to teaching English in a beautiful quiet, little beach side town with not so many tourists. Here we could go and not only maybe teach the locals something new but also improve our Spanish and get away from the 'gringo trail'.
Arriving in Gigante gave both of us an instant feeling of relaxation and comfort. Friendly, happy, smiling faces everywhere were eager to say hello and wave as we walked throughout town, amazing local women cooked fish and lobster that you can only dream about, and every sunset was more breathtaking than the last. With such a small number of around 400 people and by some of the best surf breaks in the country, we knew we were going to enjoy spending the next month here. After meeting some good looking guys named Bo Fox and Gavin, we arranged to have some meetings about what kind of volunteering projects we could take part in Gigante over the following weeks, such as helping in the school garden, participating in the intercambio sessions for language skills and lending a hand wherever necessary. Bo works as the project manager for a non-profit organization called Project WOO (Waves Of Optimism). Project WOO uses funds and volunteers to give back to local communities of Gigante and improve surfing’s global footprint.
As it is coming up to summer and the end of the school year, over the next few weeks we plan to help out in Gigante with the local children and teachers in organizing and help run a summer camp. This is so that the children will not only have something to do during their holidays, but also as a means introduce the children to different forms of art, physical education and recycling.
Please donate today and help us raise money for this wonderful program that is making a DIFFERENCE in the world. They have numerous programs in place that are making major changes for the people here, such as a WOO funded school bus and a trash clean-up program. One-hundred percent of the profits are donated to WOO, and every dollar helps the community that has already become so close to our hearts.
Thank you all for your support!
