Juliana Mittino – Volunteer Fall 2011

I am so excited to be a part of Project Wave Of Optimism (WOO) in Gigante.  A few months ago I told my brother that I wanted to volunteer in a place with a beach and jungle, somewhere in Latin America.  His response was, “Let me put you in touch with my friends, Bo and Trent.”  What a connection he’s made.

Gigante is a spectacular. It sits within a beautiful forest that is bordered by secluded shorelines with incredible waves. It’s no wonder this is becoming a destination for travelers from around the globe.

Even more charming than the landscape are the people.  Since arriving, we immediately began experiencing the open-arms attitude of this small town.  It is virtually impossible to pass anyone on the street without exchanging smiles and hellos.  It is not uncommon for kids to pass us on the road, holding up a hand for a high five.  A little girl who knows I will be her future English teacher coyly says, “Hello, Juliana…Goodbye, Juliana…” as I pass her along the road.

Project WOO is an organization that uses funds and volunteers to give back to the community of Gigante.  There is a WOO-initiated community bus that takes middle and high school students to a school that is 20k away, a trash incentive program where kids can rent surfboards in exchange for picking up trash and an English program implemented at the local elementary school, to name a few of WOOs projects.

I am an elementary school teacher in Claremont, California.  I am currently on leave for the first half of this year to be able to experience another culture and learn about a new part of the world.  At home, I enjoy working on our school garden and teaching students about sustainability.  Here in Gigante I will be teaching approximately 70 students English in grades first through sixth.  I also will be further developing the school garden where students can learn about life cycles, healthy eating and sustainability.  Greg will help in the construction of the garden and an outdoor seating area where the classes will be taught.

Any donation you can make to support me (and Greg) in our efforts here will be greatly appreciated.  It’s tax deductible and would be a lovely substitute for my birthday coming up (November 2nd….the big 3-0).

Thank you!

Juliana
